I liked the book because it focuses on practical philosophy and also gives some hints about Spinoza's ontology. The other chapters are illuminating, and make me want to read the Ethics very much, but the book overall is unlike any of Deleuze's other studies: it is entirely focused on Spinoza and doesn't contribute too many innovative concepts/interpretations.This is a series of short essays and one definition section, held together by Deleuzian interpretative flair. The mid-section or index was a little excessively dense and not introductory, so I zoned out and wandered along to other sections. Spinoza's theoretical philosophy is one of the most radical attempts to construct a pure ontology with a single infinite substance.
This book, which presents Spinoza's main ideas in dictionary form, has as its subject the opposition between ethics and morality, and the link between ethical and ontological propositions. Considering himself an empiricist and a vitalist, his body of work, which rests upon concepts such as multiplicity, constructivism, difference and desire, stands at a substantial remove from the main traditions of 20th century Continental thought. Even if you dont sit down and read through the terms (I'll admit I jumped around a lot) this book is worth reading for a few rock solid essays about Spinoza at the beginning and end of the book. The third chapter examines the correspondence between Blyenbergh and Spinoza in regard to the problem of evil. Overall, the book can provide a fair overview of Spinoza's life and work, but the bulk of the book is a dictionary of Spinozist terms which I, for one, had difficulty grasping without the proper background. The dictionary section is kinda boring but the other parts are very good. The fifth chapter returns to essay form. The thThis book consists of 6 chapters. Deleuze finds himself in the same awe as most readers of Spinoza - the humility in his words gives way to the beautiful composition and entwinement of Deleuze himself and Spinoza. It is a brilliant book about ethics and the new ontology deleuze is creating. Ever think wow i should read spinoza, but need some coaxing to actually get urself around to read it.
